The first phase of a ceasefire deal brokered by Qatar and reached between Israel and Hamas, should start seeing the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners as early as Sunday.
The deal was announced yesterday, with the Qatari Prime Minister expressing the hope that the ceasefire is the “first page” in ending the war in Gaza.
US President Joe Biden is taking credit for helping to draft the deal, which he says is exactly the same as that he presented back in May.
He fielded questions from reporters who asked whether the timing had anything to do with Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
He was asked whether he was confident the deal would hold. “I’m very confident,” he responded. Another reporter asked “Who takes credit for this Mr. President—you or Trump?” to which Biden responded “Is that a joke?”
