A man whose name was synonymous with MUN’s original Breezeway Bar for more than three decades has died.
Gary Clarke, the longtime manager of the Breezeway, passed away recently in Ottawa at the age of 74.
Known affectionately and ironically as “Tiny,” Clarke was an institution for students attending MUN from the late 1970s until 2005, when he retired.
Working with the Council of the Students’ Union, he ran the original Breezeway, scoring many coups by bringing in big bands from the Tragically Hip to Green Day to play at the old TSC, or Thomson Student Centre.
In 2018, he moved to Ottawa to live with his brother and family.
Clarke’s remains were returned to St. John’s for burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, alongside his parents.
Donations in his name can be made to a charity such as the Parkinson’s Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Society, and MS Society.
