St. John’s councillors are facing more “not in my backyard” style pushback regarding a residential development in the city’s west end.
Owners of the 100-year-old Leaside Manor on Old Topsail Road want to build an extension that would include 18 two-bedroom units.
It would be connected to the existing heritage home by a one-storey corridor.
Eighteen submissions from area residents were received by the city, with only three in favour of the plan.
The other 15 said parking, traffic and congestion will only get worse, while citing concerns with noise, loss of privacy, loss of green space, and size of the project.
Nonetheless, city staff are recommending approval, saying they have no concerns with traffic and parking based on current numbers.
But that’s no guarantee it will get the green light when it goes before council for a vote later today.
Council recently rejected a 96-unit apartment building for the centre of the city, which was also recommended for approval, following blowback from neighbours.
