New research from the Angus Reid Institute has found that about 60 per cent of Canadians would support sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine if some sort of a peace deal is made.
Following a call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, it was revealed that a deal had been reached for a ceasefire on all energy and infrastructure as work continues toward a more permanent end to the war.
Jon Roe of the Angus Reid Institute believes the support for peacekeeping comes from Canada’s history with being involved in such efforts in other conflicts, as well as general support of Ukraine.
Roe notes there are people who would not support that type of Canadian involvement.
He says about 30 per cent of respondents indicated they would not support Canadian peacekeeping in Ukraine, with that sentiment lying mostly among Conservative voters.
He says Conservative voters are more likely to say Canada has done enough, they have sent enough money and resources to the country, and it is time to focus on issues at home.
