Liberal Leader Mark Carney is elaborating on a plan to slash fees for Marine Atlantic ferries.
It was one month ago that the premier of P.E.I. said he had a verbal commitment from Carney to cut tolls and fees for the Confederation Bridge and the Wood Islands ferry.
Asked about that at the time, Premier Andrew Furey said he would expect the same treatment for the Marine Atlantic service to and from this province.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has since said he would “take a look” at those fees.
And today Carney expanded on the Liberal plan, saying he would lower Confederation Bridge tolls “by more than half” — from $50 to $20 — but also lower costs by “at least half” for passengers on Marine Atlantic.
Bridges and ferries are critical to Atlantic Canadians — and our national economy.
My government will drop tolls on the Confederation Bridge from $50 to $20, and lower costs by at least half for Northumberland Ferries, Marine Atlantic, and The Coopérative de Transport Maritime…

He said fares will also be reduced to transport goods, but no numbers or percentages were attached.
Carney said that would make life easier to trade between provinces, though the Newfoundland government has said it will not participate in a Canada-wide free trade agreement, given other barriers created through Transport Canada.
NDP’s Jagmeet Singh has also stated he would lower the cost of using the ferry system for people of this province.
