A Newfoundlander who tried to appeal to Pope Francis last year is disappointed with his efforts to address clergy abuse during his time as Pope.
Francis died at his Vatican residence this morning, a day after he spoke to his followers in Rome during the Easter Service.
While the pope has been praised for his efforts to reconcile the history of abuse within the Roman Catholic Church, one advocate and survivor disagrees.
Gemma Hickey says the Pope “fell short of delivering the decisive action needed to confront the Church’s ongoing abuse crisis.”
Hickey says that while the Pope did apologize to some survivors of abuse, they believe Francis failed to take any substantive action.
They stress that it is of the utmost importance that the next leader of the church take accountability and action against the wrongdoings of the past.
