HMCS Cabot is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic—one of the most significant operations of World War II—with a parade and wreath-laying ceremony in St. John’s tomorrow.
The Royal Canadian Navy suffered the loss of more than 2,200 lives and 33 vessels while fighting for control of the vital North Atlantic shipping routes.
The Canadian Merchant Navy lost more than 70 ships and 1,700 lives.
The Royal Canadian Navy destroyed, or assisted in the destruction of, 33 German U-boats and 42 enemy ships.
Members of HMCS Cabot, and the Canadian Armed Forces, will form a parade at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, proceeding from the St. John’s Port Authority on Water Street to the National War Memorial for a ceremony and wreath-laying at 10:50.
The general public is invited to attend.
