The fisheries union has laid out its wishes for the 2025 northern cod management plan.
Based on a robust catch rate last year and a 15 per cent increase in the spawning stock biomass, the FFAW is calling on Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson to increase the total allowable catch to 35,000 tonnes, almost double the current TAC.
The union says the first 115,000 tonnes of any management plan should be allocated to the inshore fishery, but the federal government last year disagreed with that position, allowing the offshore boats into the mix.
FFAW President Dwan Street would like to see any increase in the coed quota go to area 3K, which is north of Cape Freels, while maintaining the 2J take.
She is also asking Minister Thompson for an in-person meeting, and would like to see a timely decision on the management plan so that coastal communities can properly prepare.
