The Opposition says recent allegations made by the FFAW warrant investigation.
Tony Wakeham was responding to union president Dwan Street who says significant amounts of snow crab is being trucked out the province, leaving some plant workers with fewer hours of work.
The union says despite stable crab landings, many processing plants are operating at “historically low capacities” leaving workers with less than half of their usual hours during peak crab season.
Wakeham says what the union is charging is serious, and he’s calling on the province to order an immediate investigation.
He believes a separate Department of Fisheries with a “full-time minister dedicated solely” to the sector is an important requirement that he’s committed to.
