Beef prices are on the rise, and researchers are trying to figure out why there is such a big discrepancy in what people are paying in Canada versus what they are paying in the United States.
Sylvain Charlebois, director of Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, told The Tim Powers Show on VOCM, part of the explanation comes down to herd size, with the Canadian herd being the same size now as it was back in 1989 despite the country’s population increasing by 13-million.
Charlebois states that the U.S. is facing a similar issue, but prices in Canada are “clearly out-pacing” what is being seen south of our border, with Canadian consumers sometimes paying double or triple the cost. “So you have to wonder what is going on here?” states Charlebois, who says they can’t explain why there is such a difference.
Charlebois wonders if there is “something fishy” happening, particularly with the packaging of the product, noting that the former Biden administration in the U.S. “went after packers,” and McDonalds in that country sued packers over allegations of “collusion.”
