A former Stephenville town councillor says some local decision-makers chose to forge ahead with the sale of the Stephenville Airport to Carl Dymond despite the red flags raised.
The airport, which was recently downgraded to an aerodrome by Transport Canada, is essentially dead in the water after Newfoundland Power cut off the power last week.
A Cape Breton aviation services company, Celtic Air Services, is interested in the facility which has seen a steady decline despite lofty and ambitious plans outlined by owner Carl Dymond a few years ago.
Lenny Tiller, a vocal opponent of the process surrounding the airport’s sale, told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that he was particularly concerned with the failure to seek proposals from others who might be interested in running the facility.
When he and some residents were bringing up concerns about red flags, “why didn’t the town step in” and put a pause on the process?” Tiller asks. Instead it was “full-speed ahead on Mr. Dymond and Mr. Dymond alone.”
