The City of Mount Pearl is renaming the June Holiday to National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The change, announced at last evening’s council meeting, will be realized annually on the Monday closest to June 24 which this year falls on June 23.
Mayor Dave Aker says the change reflects their dedication to decolonizing municipal practices and promoting Indigenous perspectives.
He added that it’s a step forward in the journey toward reconciliation and inclusivity.
