Members of the province’s uniformed services – including military, sheriffs officers, corrections, police, fire and paramedics, are squaring off on the basketball court this weekend for the Battle of the Badges fundraising event.
This year’s the two-day competition will take place at the PowerPlex on Crosbie Road starting this evening, and continuing into tomorrow.
The six teams involved are raising money for The Gathering Place.
Nick Power of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department is feeling confident.
“I’m competitive, and it’s a competitive sport. I’m not very good offensively, but I think I’m pretty good defensively, so my job is to try to stop this guy here,” he says pointing to Patrick Smith.)
Paddy Smith of the Sheriff’s Department says basketball is his sport.
“I love basketball. I grew up with five brothers and we grew up our whole lives playing basketball, no other sport…so we’ve been playing now since we’ve been ten, eleven years old. I actually played against Nick over a decade ago in high school, so it’s going to be good now to get the competition back against each other.”
