“I’m a tariff person” is what U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters following a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as G7 leaders gather in Kananaskis, Alberta.
Trump admitted to a difference of opinion on trade policy between Canada and the U.S.
“I’ve always been a tariff person” Trump told reporters. “It’s simple, it’s easy, it’s precise, and it just goes very quickly. I think Mark has a more complex idea, but also very good. So, we’re going to look at both, and we’re going to see, we’re going to come out with something hopefully.”

In the meantime, Trump took the opportunity to throw barbs at former President Barack Obama, and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for deciding to exclude Russian President Vladimir Putin from what was then the G8.
“The G7 used to be the G8, Barack Obama and a person named Trudeau didn’t want to have Russia in, and I would say that that was a mistake because I don’t think you’d have a war right now if you had Russia in. And you wouldn’t have a war right now if Trump were president four years ago. But it didn’t work out that way.”
Putin was expelled from the G8 in 2014, before Trudeau was elected.
