The provincial government has revealed more details about how some 400 new educators will be added to the K-12 system by the upcoming school year.

Government set aside $20-million in the 2025 budget for the expansion.

Beginning in September, several changes are coming to the teacher allocation model.

Seventy units will be added to the needs-based allocation of teachers – meaning those who are brought in based on the needs of the class. That number will increase to over 120 beginning in September 2026.

One-hundred and seventy-five new teaching and learning assistant positions will be added to the system for this school year. That will grow to 200 next year – doubling the current allotment.

The number of “English as a second language” teachers is also going up. The ratio is being changed to one teacher for every 15-30 students. Government says this will add over 25 teachers to the system, growing to a total of over 61 additional teaching units for September 2026.

The allocation for Positive Action for Student Success (PASS) teachers is being doubled to 60 units – five speech language pathologists and five educational psychologists are also being added to the system.

Elsewhere, class size for grades one through nine is decreasing by two for this coming September.
