Happy City St. John’s is doing a full series of Jane’s Walks this summer, ranging from a stroll through woodlands near Kenmount Terrace to a guided discussion about how pedestrian infrastructure can make walking safer and more pleasant.
Also included are tours of the changing landscape of the Freshwater Valley and the Ecclesiastical District, focusing not just on the architecture but also on the social impact of the religious institutions contained therein.
Elizabeth Oliver, a director with Happy City and an urban geographer, says the first walk will look at the Leary’s Brook waterway, which empties into Long Pond.
She notes that discussion will touch on how wetlands were systematically put underground, paved over or built up, something which has had serious effects downstream because wetlands are a very serious factor in the control of flood water.
That walk takes place July 18 from 6-8 p.m. starting at the Oxen Pond Road pedestrian bridge.
