Infrastructure upgrades on our roads and underground systems have to be done, but they cause headaches not only for drivers and homeowners, but also businesses that lose out financially.
Seven in ten small businesses say they are having disruptions due to construction projects. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business released that information this week.
Jonathan Galgay, the director of legislative affairs with the CFIB in Newfoundland and Labrador, says current laws governing municipalities prohibit towns from compensating businesses who lose out because of construction projects. The federation is asking the provincial government to change the act governing municipalities in NL.
“It’s currently happening in Montreal, it’s happening in Calgary,” says Galgay, “where the municipalities themselves can set up construction mitigation policies and allow businesses to apply for compensation.”
