The Ragged Harbour fire burning near Musgrave Harbour has not grown in any appreciable way today, and officials remain hopeful that cooler temperatures and some rain in the forecast will help in their efforts to knock down the 1700 hectare blaze.
Forestry Minister Lisa Dempster says they’re hoping to make some real progress on the fire now that conditions are working in their favour.
Residents were urged to evacuate on the weekend, with many ending up in Gander where a shelter is set up at the Steele Recreation Centre.
Dempster says she’s hopeful residents will be able to return home as soon as possible, but it won’t be until at least tomorrow before they have a better handle on the situation.
“Late tomorrow there’ll be more information that will come across my desk. We’ll do an assessment tomorrow, but we know for sure that no-one is going back tomorrow” she told the Tim Powers Show. “I don’t want folks to get their hopes up.”
