Newfoundland and Labrador experienced the largest increase in the overall crime rate of any sub-federal jurisdiction in Canada last year.
The crime rate in NL rose by 5 per cent last year from 2023 whereas most other provinces saw their rate drop or hold steady. The only exception was Nova Scotia where crime increased by 3 per cent.
Moreover, Statistics Canada says the overall crime rate in this province went up by 36 per cent in the period 2014-2024.
Severe – or violent – crime dropped by 7 per cent in the metro region in 2024 compared to 2023 but rose by two per cent in the ten years 2014-2024.
Nationally, crime overall was down by four per cent last year.
The homicide rate in Canada decreased overall slightly, but there was a large increase in the proportion of women who were killed by a spouse or intimate partner, rising from 32 per cent of women victims in 2023 to 42 per cent of women victims in 2024.
