The Nature Conservancy of Canada is encouraging Canadians to start exploring some of the natural wonders in their own backyards.
Canada’s 5th annual Big Backyard BioBlitz is currently underway.
The Nature Conservancy is encouraging people to explore their backyards, and surrounding neighbourhood or nearby green spaces, and share photos of the creatures and plants they find.
Last year, Atlantic Canadians submitted nearly 7,700 photos of various plant and animal species.
The Nature Conservancy’s Mark Frank laughs that most of the photos they received last year were of birds, but he’s encouraging people to log other creatures and plants as well.
“You know what? We want to see everything. One of my colleagues has said ‘I hope that it’s more than just birds this year.’ Birds tend to be the thing most of us will take photos of, so if I can put in a pitch, anything that’s not a bird this year.”
Participants are encouraged to download the iNaturalist app and upload their photos there.
You can find all the instructions online.
