Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary says the city hears and shares concerns regarding unsafe use of fast bikes and scooters, especially along the pedestrian mall.
O’Leary raised the issue at the end of yesterday’s regular public meeting, citing numerous complaints from residents.
She assured them that chatter around potential regulations is ongoing at the municipal and provincial levels.
“I think we’ve had certainly a discussion amongst our colleagues here on that, and I did task a question to our transportation staff about where that responsibility or jurisdiction lies, and I understand it is with the province but the city needs to continue to have some dialogue there,” she said.
E-bikes have become a popular rental and mode of transportation downtown but there have been several near misses with people strolling the pedestrian mall.
