Premier John Hogan confirms that structures have been lost as the result of the forest fire in the Small Point–Adam’s Cove and Kingston area.
Hogan provided the update on the situation over the lunch hour.
Hogan says the fire has tripled in size since last night to about 735 hectares, and “burned aggressively” through the night.
He says they can’t confirm the number of structures lost as it is still very smokey in the area.
Government says they anticipate that the winds will shift today, which makes fire suppression difficult. He notes they have two water tankers, a bird dog, a helicopter, and ground crews are working in the area.
He says the focus today is on protecting structures in the communities. As well, he says there are suppression efforts on the southern edge of the fire to prevent growth in that direction.
As for the fire near Holyrood, Hogan says there was no growth overnight, and it is about 22 hectares in size.
Crews will continue working on that blaze today via helicopter bucketing, and they are making “good progress” on that fire. Hogan is not aware of any structures that have been last as a result of that fire.
