Smoke from the wildfires on the Avalon Peninsula could have big implications for some sports during the Canada Summer Games.
Organizers told reporters today that they have contingency plans for some sports, but lessons learned from previous years showed that some had to be cancelled because of a lack of second options.
The poor air quality in metro has already forced the Challenge Cup soccer match to move from Topsail to King George V in Quidi Vidi.
Canada Games CEO Karen Sherriffs cited sailing as a sport that doesn’t have an immediate plan B.
“You look at an event like sailing, for example. It’s about a kilometre or two off the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. If it had to pivot, we’d have to look for a suitable location around that piece of it,” she told reporters on Wednesday.
“There have been cases, certainly in past games, where competition hasn’t been able to go ahead due to the availability of facilities.”
Sheriffs says most of the sports have time allotted for weather delays.
