An evacuation alert is now in place for Southlands and Galway due to the movement of the Paddy’s Pond fire.

Premier John Hogan provided an update on what he calls an “unprecedented” situation during the mid-day fire update.

“We are in the process of issuing an additional evacuation alert for the areas of Southlands and Galway…given how far the fire has moved south in the Paddy’s Pond area. I believe now it would be very close to the Trans Canada Highway.”

A State of Emergency has been expanded to include parts of St. John’s, Paradise and Conception Bay South that include the areas already under evacuation alert, as well as Galway and Southlands. The premier says if an evacuation order is put in place, it will be done in a phased approach.

Residents in areas under evacuation alert are urged to have a bag packed and ready to go and to bring that bag to work if necessary.
