The union representing some 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants has signaled its intent to strike as of this weekend.
Air Canada says negotiations with CUPE have hit an impasse, prompting the 72 hour strike notice which would bring flights to a halt as of 12:01 a.m. EST Saturday.
The strike would also impact those flying under the Air Canada Rouge banner.
The union asserts its workers are getting paid “poverty wages,” while the company argues it’s latest offer was sufficient in offering a 38 per cent pay increase over four years. Air Canada says its latest offer also included plans to address the issue of flight attendants not getting paid when the aircraft isn’t in the air.
Those who are scheduled to travel this weekend will be notified of any cancellations and will be eligible for a full refund.
It comes during a busy time at St. John’s International Airport as the first lot of Canada Games athletes move out and the week two athletes fly in.
The host society has a plan for those affected by Air Canada flights, which were limited to Ontario and Quebec athletes.
