The demolition of the old U.S. Navy recreation camp in Northeast Arm, Dunville, a local eyesore and hazard, has been given the environmental green light.
Custodian of the site, Public Services and Procurement Canada had proposed to remove eight small cabins and seven support buildings, originally built in 1943. The site was abandoned in the mid-90s when the U.S. Navy pulled out of Argentia, and the buildings have since fallen victim to vandals and the elements.
The old camp was transferred to the federal government in 2017. Demolition is expected to take about two months and will include the removal of hazardous materials including asbestos, lead paint, mold and what the government calls potential ozone-depleting substances.
No new construction is planned, and the otherwise scenic property will be restored to green space which will be accessible to the public.
