The first Crown witness in the Robert Belbin murder trial described the traumatic and heartbreaking scene as she tried in vain to save the life of 22-year-old Seamus Secord.
Brittany Cochrane was driving home from work when she saw two young men, one on top of the other, near the four-way stop at Mayor Avenue and Newtown Road.
It was around 5:00 p.m. on February 7th, 2023.
She said the man on top, whose face she did not see, was hitting the other with stabbing or punching motions before getting up and running away. She saw blood on the snow as the victim got up and tried walking down Mayor Avenue while holding his stomach.
“He said he was stabbed so I told him I was calling 911 but he said not to,” the woman testified, adding she slowly followed him to his nearby house, while he was telling her his vision was getting blurry and he was cold.
Cochrane said she saw him go into his garage and collapse, so she went in to help, along with another man who seemed to know Secord.
“I told him to put pressure on the wounds but he was visibly upset and crying, walking around the garage.”
The woman said she was covered in blood as she tried to help Secord, who told her he didn’t know who stabbed him and that he was afraid he was going to die.
“He wasn’t breathing great, really bad,” she said, adding she told him to try to take deep breaths. “He said please tell my mom I love her,” words that caused Secord’s mother to break down in the courtroom.
Belbin is charged with second-degree murder and breach of probation in the trial, which is scheduled for six weeks in Supreme Court.
