Retail sales in Canada increased 1.0 per cent to $70.4 billion in August from the month before, with Newfoundland and Labrador leading the way.
Statistics Canada says sales were up in six of nine subsectors and were led by increases at motor vehicle and parts dealers.
The increase in Newfoundland and Labrador from July to August was 5.1 per cent, the largest of any jurisdiction in the country.
The Canada Summer Games were held in the metro region in August, but it’s unclear whether the economic activity associated with the event contributed to the increase in retail sales.
