RCMP is warning of yet another scam on the go – this time involving a fake rental listing in Gander.
Police were contacted after a homeowner in the town started getting knocks on his door from people looking to view a rental property listed online – however no credible listing was ever made by the owner.
The property had instead been listed online by someone else in hopes of luring in and scamming potential tenants.
RCMP have not received any reports of anyone suffering financial loss in connection with said scam.
That said, RCMP say there are tips renters should keep in mind when searching for a new place.
As the saying goes, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Watch for listings that have rent set well below the going rate or listings that require a deposit before an agreement is set in stone.
If possible, visit the property yourself to ensure it actually exists and that the listing is legit. If the online listing only features photos of the property’s exterior, request more photos from the advertiser.
If you believe you have spotted or fallen victim to a scam, alert the authorities.
