Crews Continue to Battle Wildfire Near Musgrave Harbour
A wildfire raged in central Newfoundland, encroaching on Musgrave Harbour to the point where residents were evacuated.
In an update provided by forestry officials, the fire had grown to 1,700 hectares while sitting about 2 km outside the town.
The road to Aspen Cove and ‘A Days Getaway RV Park’ was closed and the public was asked to avoid the general area.

One Man Dead as Result of Shooting Incident that Sparked Shelter in Place Order
RNC have confirmed that a 30-year-old is dead as the result of a shooting on Salter Place in St. John’s.
The incident resulted in a shelter in place advisory for Salter Place and surrounding streets, which was eventually expanded to Gros Morne Place as the investigation continued.

NL Sugar Tax Removed
The province’s sugar-sweetened beverage tax is no more.
Government announced in May that it was scrapping the levy, which charged 20 cents per litre on sugary drinks.
Finance Minister Siobhan Coady said that the tax may have changed the mindset of some, but not all.

Government Reverses Ferry Plan After Fogo Island Protest, Veteran Breakdown
The provincial government had announced that despite plans to move the Astron to the Bell Island run, it will be remaining with Fogo Island for the time being.
Frustrated ferry users on Fogo Island blocked the vessel from leaving upon hearing what government was considering.
However, a wrench was thrown in government’s plans when the Veteran, which was going to be kept on the Fogo Island run, had to be taken out of commission due to mechanical issues.

Favoured Men’s, Women’s Crews Claim Royal St. John’s Regatta Titles
The two championship races at the Royal St. John’s Regatta this year resemble last year with both resulting in back-to-back wins.
Capital Home Hardware led from start to finish in the men’s race while Volkswagen St. John’s won the women’s title.
The race was moved to the end of July due to the Canada Summer Games.
