Sentencing in a fatal drunk-driving case remains on hold as the accused’s new lawyer gets up to speed on the case.
Thirty-eight-year-old Rod Constantine pleaded guilty last summer to five counts including impaired and dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm, plus driving while prohibited — twice since the fatal crash on Empire Avenue in December of 2023.
Thirty-two-year-old Mark Squires was killed, while the accused and a passenger suffered serious, life-altering injuries.
But Constantine fired his lawyer prior to sentencing last fall, with the court granting him time to find another to make submissions on sentence.
Today, court was told that Legal Aid lawyer is now on the case but will need a little more time to review all of the evidence before proposing a punishment.
An update on his progress is expected when the case is called again on February 5th.
