Officials from Denmark and Greenland are set to hold what are being called “high-stakes” talks in Washington today.
The meeting comes as Donald Trump continues to ruffle feathers over his desire to take over the autonomous territory, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trump’s argument is that the United States needs Greenland for security purposes, and has mused about taking it by force.
Greenland’s prime minister says its people would rather remain with Denmark than become Americans, calling the situation a “geopolitical crisis.”
Canadians are watching the development very closely as well, with some pundits arguing that Canada could be next.
Memorial University political scientist Luke Ashworth calls the potential implications “catastrophic.”
“On the one hand, this would be a major change…in U.S. policy, far more than in say intervening in Venezuela or in Iran, but the implications of it, if it does happen, would be far more catastrophic for American alliances and for Canadian foreign policy.”
