A person uprooted by the wildfires in Conception Bay North says it’s taking a long time to get relief money to people in her position – a situation she finds frustrating.
Robyn Dwyer and her family, who were living in Blackhead, have been renting in Carbonear since the summer.
She doesn’t understand why the process is moving so slowly. She says the Red Cross was top notch during the response phase with boots on the ground.
She finds it disconcerting that not much, if any, of the fundraised money has reached the people for the rebuilding process.
“There’s a lot we have to do to with the Red Cross to determine if we’re eligible for relief – things like getting photos and quotes.”
Dwyer says it seems as if those in her situation – underinsured – are worse off than those who were uninsured.
She says they had a lot more contact with the previous government than the current one.
“We had constant contact with the Liberal Government. I was on a texting basis with the premier myself during the response phase. With this government, our MHA has been good but in terms of contact with higher-ups, we haven’t received much of any support,” says Dwyer.”
