RCMP are warning of an email scam making the rounds.
This time the scammer represents themselves as part of the RCMP, investigating online sexual related offences against youth, and threatens that an arrest is coming.
Last Friday, RCMP were contacted by a person who had received such an email, which appeared to be signed by the Commissioner of the RCMP.
The scammer claimed that the individual was the subject of a cybercrime police investigation for sexual offences committed against a youth, and they further warned that an arrest warrant would be issued if they failed to respond to the email within 48 hours.
The email address used was rcmpgrcweb@gmail.com. That address is not associated with the RCMP.
Formal police statements about an investigation are taken in person, and findings of guilt are determined through a judicial court process – not by police.
