Tensions between the United States and Cuba are rising as the U.S. turns off the taps on oil heading into the country.
That’s led to an energy crisis in the Caribbean nation and concerns that the two countries are on the brink of war.
Lots of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians travel to Cuba each winter and spring to get away from the cold and dreary weather, but many may be second-guessing those travel plans.
The CAA’s Julia Kent, as of Friday, said Canadian officials were advising Canadians travelling to Cuba to exercise a high degree of caution, which is on the lower end of its four level list of travel advisories.
She says Cuba is still a desirable destination.
She says “things are typically business as usual” under the first two travel advisory risk levels. However, “it’s when you get into that level 3 or 4, where we would really recommend that you talk to a travel advisor, or reconsider your trip. Or at the very least, have a mandatory reason for taking that vacation or that trip.”
