A Mount Pearl man is scheduled to be sentenced today for dangerous driving causing the deaths of Haley Keating and Erin Pretty.
The 22-year-old friends were in a car that was struck head-on by an SUV that drifted into their lane on the TCH near Arnold’s Cove.
It happened just over two years ago, on January 21, 2024.
Austin Deir, now 73, was first charged with impaired and dangerous driving causing both deaths.
But the impaired charges were later dropped after the Crown couldn’t prove he was over the legal limit.
Still, they’re seeking a 3 to 4-year prison sentence, while the defence says Deir should serve two years’ house arrest.
Judge Andrew Brown is due to give his decision in Clarenville Provincial Court at 10 a.m.
