The CEO of Food First NL says developing long-term strategies is all well and good, but he is encouraging government to find policies that can be implemented quickly to help people with food insecurity in the shorter term.
Josh Smee highlights several things the PCs promised in their election platform, such as implementing a poverty reduction strategy and expanding school food programs, as measures that will help people who are struggling to put food on the table.
Smee argues that while plans and targets are important, government can’t wait for the “perfect strategy” to take action and they need to find some “quick wins” that can help people now.
He believes an example of that would be to index income support to inflation.
