The lone suspect in the horrific mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge BC has been identified, and the death toll from the attack has been reduced to nine.
RCMP in British Columbia have identified 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar as the alleged shooter.
Police were called to the school just before 1:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
When officers arrived, there was active gunfire, and police say shots were fired in their direction.
Inside, the accused was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
Two firearms, a long gun and a modified handgun, were recovered from the scene.
Nine people, including the accused, are dead. The victims inside the school have been identified as a 39-year-old woman – who was a teacher, three 12-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy, and a 13-year-old boy. Two others, a 39-year-old woman and 11-year-old boy, were found dead inside a home in the town.
Two other victims, a 12-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman, were transported to hospital where they remain with serious injuries.
Twenty-five others were also injured in the attack.
The RCMP say there has been speculation about the relationship between the shooter and some of the victims, but police are not in a position to confirm specifics at this time. It has, however, been widely reported that the victims inside the home were Van Rootselar’s mother and brother.
