The department responsible for wildlife has confirmed what trappers have been reporting for years.
Department of Forestry biologists conducting a caribou survey in the Lac Joseph area last winter spotted a wolverine and captured the creature on camera.
It’s the first verified sighting of the endangered species in Labrador in six decades.
The wolverine, the largest member of the weasel family, is notoriously reclusive and hard to spot.
The department says it has received numerous reports of wolverine sightings, tracks and even possible images from throughout Labrador over the years, including the north coast, south coast and in Labrador West.
The wolverine was designated as endangered under the provincial Endangered Species Act in 2003.
Wildlife officers urge anyone who spots a wolverine in the region to reach out via email at endangeredspecies@gov.nl.ca
