There will be plenty of stargazing going on this weekend as it is Astronomy Day.
The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, St. John’s Centre and MUN’s Johnson Geo Centre have teamed up to put off the event at the Geo Centre on Signal Hill this afternoon and tonight.
Indoors, there will be astronomy displays, telescope displays and expert advice on the latest legacy telescopes and techniques for their use in viewing or photographing the wonders of the sky.
The society’s Robert Babb says it can be hard to view the stars and planets in Newfoundland because of the weather, but he’s hoping for clear skies.
“There are thousands of beautiful spectacles to be seen by the use of technology in these days and even from light polluted places like St. John’s, we have specialized filters and we can indeed capture a lot of those beautiful sights,” he said.
“So while we don’t get a lot of chances to do so, it’s very rewarding when we do.”
Outdoor viewing of the sun with specialized telescopes takes place from 1-4 while viewing of the moon and Jupiter, stars and nebula is from 9-11.
The rain date is tomorrow.
