This year marks the 75th anniversary of Signal Hill becoming a national historic site.
The area is known for its scenic views and extensive history.
Manager of National Historic Sites and Visitor Experience for Parks Canada, Pascale McGuire says the anniversary highlights the importance that the site holds for people in the province.
“Signal Hill is certainly one of the flagship sites for provincial tourism and even within Parks Canada. From the visual perspective anyone coming into the city can see Cabot Tower, you come in by plane you can see it, you come in on a cruise ship you see it. So many people know to come to Signal Hill even if they don’t know what its called before they get here. It draws people in.”
Coincidently, it is also the 125th anniversary of the first Trans Atlantic radio signal which was received at Signal Hill in 1901. This is what McGuire says was the birth of modern communication.
