Despite a recent assessment by DFO that mackerel remains in the critical zone, Oceana Canada believes there is proof that the rebuilding of the stock is working.
A marine scientist with Oceana Canada, Jack Daly, says while the stock remains in the critical zone, it has grown “slightly” since a commercial moratorium was put in place four years ago.
He says it is not surprising that the stock is not healthy because when the moratorium was put in place they were told it would take between six and 18 years to rebuild.
