The provincial government says it’s found dangerous levels of radon inside almost two dozen public housing units across the province.
Radon is a naturally occurring, colourless, odourless gas that can enter homes through the ground.
The tests, which have been ongoing since 2023, looked at 172 homes in St. John’s, Gander, Stephenville and Burin.
Twenty-three homes were identified as exceeding Health Canada’s threshold for dangerous levels of radon.
The minister of housing, Joedy Wall, says over half of the homes have been remodelled so far, and another eight still need work.
“Once a property is determined to require mitigation, we’ll certainly do that testing. These measures are taken within one year as per the Health Canada guidelines, and we’re working very closely with Health Canada on this,” he told VOCM News.
“We’ll continue to work with Health Canada to make sure that the testing is done, mitigation, if required, is completed, and that these spaces are safe.”
