An annual economic conference in Labrador has been cancelled as a result of the dispute between the Innu Nation and the provincial government over the group’s history.
Expo Labrador was supposed to take place from now until Thursday, but was cancelled at the last minute pending a resolution between government and the Innu Nation.
The Innu Nation had already withdrawn from the expo before the event was cancelled.
The dispute between the Innu and government stems from an incident last week involving a planned exhibit to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The exhibit was meant to highlight and celebrate Innu culture dating back thousands of years, however government stepped in and said the display could not go ahead due to timeline discrepancies.
Premier Tony Wakeham, minister responsible for Indigenous Affairs Lela Evans and Lake Melville MHA Keith Russell met with the Innu Nation on Monday evening.
In a statement, government says all recommendations put forward were rejected, however Premier Wakeham remains open to further discussions.
