Anthropologists and archaeologists at Memorial University have come out in support of the Innu Nation regarding the cancellation of the Innu exhibit.
The controversy has also resulted in the cancellation of Expo Labrador 2026.
The Innu Nation was instructed to remove or alter references to their presence in Labrador prior to the 1700s, and that stone tools and other materials from Innu lands could not be presented as connected to Innu ancestors.
Seven members of the Department of Archaeology at MUN have penned a letter of support.
They’re concerned that this might be more than a disagreement over wording in a museum exhibit, and rather reflect an attempt by a provincial institution to impose a “narrow and outdated” interpretation of archaeological evidence over Innu historical knowledge.
They’re calling on The Rooms and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to withdraw what they see as a restrictive interpretation of Innu history.)
