Hundreds gathered in downtown St. John’s on this Memorial Day to mark the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
The day honours the soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Battle of the Somme on July 1st, 1916. Although nearly 800 men entered battle that day, only 68 answered roll call the following morning.
In St. John’s, hundreds gathered in the sunshine at the National War Memorial to honour the fallen, following a parade by the Royal Canadian Legion Newfoundland and Labrador Command.
Minister Lin Paddock was in attendance on behalf of the provincial government, as well as other representatives from across the province.
