The recreational fishery is well underway, and while all are encouraged to join in on the season, they are also urged to keep safety at the forefront while out on the water.
With this year’s season being extended to seven days a week in 2J3KL, the RNC is expecting more people to be participating.
Whether an experienced boater or a newbie, police are stressing the importance of being prepared for cold water temperatures and changing weather conditions.
Police urge people to always wear a life jacket, to keep speeds reasonable, and never to operate a boat while impaired.
DFO fisheries officer Albert Grandy echoes the RNC’s messaging.
He encourages people to have a plan, to do a “thorough check” of their vessel and equipment, to let people know where they are going and when they will return, and to have a working communications device in case they run into trouble.
