The founder of the Swilers Rugby Club has passed away.
Dr. Noel Browne, a pioneer of rugby in Newfoundland and Labrador, passed away Thursday at the age of 83. Born in Ireland, Browne founded the Swilers Rugby Club, helped establish the Newfoundland and Labrador Rugby Union, and represented Canada internationally.
In a statement, the Swilers Rugby Club called Browne “a true legend,” saying his spirit “will live on with every Swiler who steps onto the field.”
Tim Powers, who played rugby under Dr. Browne, saw him as a mentor to him and other rugby “hooligans.” He says he loved the fighting spirit in Dr. Browne.
“He was a proud Irishman and brought that pride and injected it here so that we, a small province, could go up against British Columbia, Ontario,” said Powers. “Many of us carry with us that pride today.”
Funeral arrangements are being handled through Carnell’s Funeral Home.
