The minister of forestry is keeping his eye on a potentially volatile situation in a heavily-wooded area on the edge of St. John’s.
Cochrane Pond Park, which some in the area would rather see levelled for safety reasons has been the site of numerous fires over the past week.
One person was arrested in connection with one of the fires, and the others remain under investigation.
The park is owned by the province but had been leased to a private operator. The capital city is also involved in attempts to get people out of the park.
Minister Pleaman Forsey says several public bodies have a hand in the situation.
“Right now we’re trying to protect public safety but as negotiations and discussions go on, we will be making further announcements,” says Minister Forsey.
