The agency which runs the workers compensation system says 2025 was a good year on several fronts, but adds that it cannot let up when it comes to safety and accident prevention.
The number of new injury claims went to an all-time low and the lost-time injury rate, 1.2 per 1,000 workers, was also an all-time low.
Elizabeth Lane, the CEO of WorkplaceNL, says the vast majority of employers did not have a single injury in the workplace.
“Ninety-three per cent of our employers in this province reported no injuries,” she noted.
The 2025 performance review also recorded an injury fund of nearly 140 per cent, meaning it has a healthy surplus.
Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour President Jessica McCormick says that percentage well exceeds WorkplaceNL’s original target of 110-115 per cent. She’s calling on government to increase the rate of pay to injured workers to 90 per cent of gross from 85 per cent of net, and to eliminate caps on compensation.
“It’s a very healthy fund and we’ve been asking government for a number of years to increase the payment rate,” she says.
